Zbrushは、従来のポリゴンモデリングとはまったく異なるアプローチでモデリングをすることが可能です。その
様子はよく粘土にたとえられるようです。それは事実なのですが、操作に対する反応が早すぎて、遊んでいるうちは良いのですが、いざしっかりとものを作ろう
とすると、思わぬ事態が次々に起こり対処しきれなくなってしまうようです。はじめのうちは、まさに小学生の紙粘土細工のように形の定まらないよれよれした
結果になることが多いようです。確かに直感的に次々と操作を加えることは可能ですが、初心者のうちはそれに振り回されてしまうということでしょう。
　ポリゴンモデリングは、どちらかと言うとカチッとした硬い形が得意です。というよりも、硬くなりやすい傾向にありますす。ZBrushは逆に柔らかい有機的なものになり易い傾向にあります。
　
そこで、このチュートリアルでは、マスク機能を執拗なまでに使用して硬くなるようにモデリングを進める手法を紹介します。実際のところ、ここまでやらなく
ても良いとは思いますが、直感だけに頼ることもないということを体験的に理解できるのではないでしょうか？ZBrushは柔らかくすることが得意ですか
ら、それはいつでもできることだと考えるわけです。人によっては、このようなやり方が性格にあうかもしれません。いずれにしても、マスク機能は重要な機能
の一つですから、練習することをお勧めします。

　ところで、少し話がそれますが、現在の日本では、なんとなくの風潮として、物事を余り考えることなく直感的に処理できることが尊ばれる傾向があるように思います。しかし、何の努力もなしにそんなことがあり得るでしょうか？私は、趣味でギターの
演奏をしますが、考えなしに演奏するためにはそれ以前に数え切れないくらい繰り返し練習をします。また、うまくいかない理由を考えて、具体的に方法を考え
たり、調べたりします。もちろんＣＧでも同じです。皆さんに最良と思われる方法を考案しようと何度も同じものを作ります。例え、有名なアーティストがすばらしい作品を「なーんにも考えないで作りました」と言ったとしても鵜呑みにしてはいけません。そういう人は努力を努力とも思わないでこなし、考えているのだと思ったほうが賢明でしょう。そもそもそういう人とあなたが同じではない可能性のほうが高いはずです。
